A remarkable typed letter signed ("Ian Fleming"), dated 15 October 1958, to his most diligent motoring correspondent, Dr. G.R.C.D. Gibson of Wisbech. This letter is part of their famous exchange regarding James Bond’s automobile, in which Fleming famously teased that Bond was "being re-equipped" with a new car.
In this response, Fleming writes in his signature urbane and playful style, declining Gibson's kind invitation for Bond to join the Aston Martin Owners' Club, noting that "neither Bond nor his biographer are owners of an Aston Martin" and humorously passing the matter to the "head of Admin. at the Secret Service". The letter also shows Fleming responding to Gibson’s suggestion that he write a motor racing novel by revealing he has "in mind a story with motor racing as its background," a seed that would eventually bloom decades later into the basis for Anthony Horowitz's Trigger Mortis .
