Typed Letter Signed, one page (8.5 x 11"), with four lines added in the author's hand and signed "Jack" in pencil, original fold lines present, Near Fine condition. Rocky Mount, North Carolina, Sunday [1952].
An intimate letter from one of the most consequential moments in American literary history, written by Jack Kerouac immediately upon his return from Mexico City — where he had been visiting William S. Burroughs — and addressed to Rose Enoch Rotberg, a figure unrecorded in the standard Kerouac literature. Neither the letter nor its recipient appears in Jack Kerouac: The Selected Letters or in any published biography, making this a document of genuine scholarly significance.
Writing from his sister's home in Rocky Mount, North Carolina, Kerouac opens with a characteristic road anecdote — abandoning a five-hour bus layover to hitchhike the final thirty-eight miles with "an okie Florida cracker character" — before pivoting into a lyrical meditation on his rejection of New York in favor of the American interior. "The sweet night air, the eternal verities of starry sky, eternal big dipper — the fire glow of tobacco curing barns at night — the sweet mornings, the birds, the roosters — the dew on the fence," he writes. "No more city for me as long as I live...Yes, I'm an old man at 30."
The letter's biographical placement is significant. Kerouac had just finished Doctor Sax and was turning his full attention to the manuscript that would become On the Road, with Rocky Mount serving as his primary writing retreat for much of this period. This letter documents the very moment of arrival and the conscious decision to choose the country over the city — the foundational act of self-mythologizing that On the Road would immortalize.
